Department of Geoscience, Stony Brook University

Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Geosciences at Stony Brook University located at Stony Brook, New York. Our department has 14 full-time faculty in geological sciences, covering the areas of crystal chemistry, geochemistry, mineral and rock physics, petrology, sedimentary geology, and seismology and tectonics. One of Stony Brook's strengths continues to be opportunities for interdisciplinary research in the geological sciences, both within the department and beyond.

The geological sciences faculty maintains ties with Stony Brook's Marine Sciences Research Center, the Department of Ecology and Evolution, the Department of Chemistry, the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

A number of faculty work closely with researchers at nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory and Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory as well as other laboratories and departments through the world. The Earth and Space Sciences building also houses the Center for Environmental Molecular Science (CEMS), the Mineral Physics Institute (MPI), and the Consortium for Materials Properties Research in Earth Sciences (COMPRES)-all of which are directed or presided by different Geoscience faculty.

We encourage you to explore our site and hope that you find Stony Brook University and our department exciting and friendly. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

We would like to welcome our newest faculty member, Dr. Timothy Glotch to our department.
